WHAT IS AYURVEDA?
Ayurveda is the time-tested, universal, natural, preventative, and holistic approach to healthcare originating from India over 5000 years ago. It literally translates as ‘science of life’ (‘ayu’ means life; ‘veda’ means science). But Ayurveda is not merely a system of medicine, it is a way of life. Ayurveda identifies imbalance in the mind-body before it develops into disease and uses a combination of food, spices, herbs, natural oils, daily and seasonal rhythms, gentle seasonal cleansing, lifestyle, yoga, and Ayurvedic manual therapies to correct the root causes of imbalances in the body and mind. It is gentle and natural and therefore free of negative side-effects. Ayurvedic practices improve digestion, absorption and assimilation of the foods we eat, nourish the bodily tissues, calm the mind, and discourage toxicity.
Ayurveda’s prevention-oriented way of living, offers practical and easy ways to manage your own health by helping you understand and thus balance your unique body-mind constitution in harmony with nature. Where illness does develop, Ayurveda seeks to treat its root cause, rather than just the symptoms, thereby producing a more enduring resolution. Ayurveda often recommends very simple but highly effective changes to bring individuals into balance with the elements of their constitution, environment, and lifestyle.
If you would like to incorporate Ayurveda into your life to address a health concern or simply want to maintain optimum health I’d love to support you in doing so. You can read more about the consultation process here or get in touch on anthea@modernayurvedist.
